{"id":6312,"date":"2023-10-26T04:05:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T04:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/changestartsnow.ca\/?post_type=documents&#038;p=6312"},"modified":"2023-10-26T04:05:34","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T04:05:34","slug":"black-heritage-network-meeting-may-1-2000","status":"publish","type":"documents","link":"https:\/\/changestartsnow.ca\/fr\/documents\/black-heritage-network-meeting-may-1-2000\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Heritage Network Meeting- May 1, 2000\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Black Heritage Network Meeting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May 1, 2000&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants&rsquo; Output&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meeting Participants: Jim Hill, Beth Dennahower, Yvonne Hopkins, Robin Parisi, Gary Hardy, Rochelle Bush, June Harper, Harry Harper, Margot Leslie, Ada Summers, Palmier Stevenson-Young, Peter Meyler, Wilma Morrison, Lyn Roberts&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resource People: Paul Samson (facilitator), Karen Daniels, Lorraine Hogan, Arlene White, Eva Salter (chair)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediate Project Challenges:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Co-ordination of event dates: events conflict (e.g. slave crossing from Buffalo to Fort Erie)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>August 12, 2000 slave crossing event in Fort Erie&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need for organizational assistance&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge: How to involve folks in Fort Erie&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategic Analysis of the African-Canadian (Niagara&rsquo;s Freedom Trail) Heritage Tour:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History of Tour:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Began with community wanting to tell its story and generate revenue through We tourism opportunities&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NET Corp approached by Ministry of Tourism to facilitate development of network in Niagara and develop a product&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sites operated on own &#8211; need to link them&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Received money for publication of brochure&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ontario Heritage Council &#8211; approached Niagara tour with money to write and produce a book &#8211; by Owen Thomas &#8211; History of Niagara (now on 3rd printing&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>books sold at cost to sites to sell for profit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attempts to bring sites together but were unsuccessful &#8211; main stakeholders were involved but others were not, limited resources&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who needed to be involved?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wanted to focus on Freedom Trail &#8211; journey didn&rsquo;t end at river&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While stakeholders have not met for several years, NET Corp still active in marketing&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Black history &#8211; mandate of NET Corp to promote regional tourism. People know Niagara Falls but not the other things Niagara has to offer&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suggestion re: need for an \u00ab\u00a0Ontario\u00a0\u00bb brochure that markets all sites in Ontario and tells the whole story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>? Including grave sites in region in the product&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 tour operators include black heritage&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Intent of tour:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generate revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote and preserve history (education St. Catharines museum has a teacher kit, Doll house &#8211; use the book, visits to schools, part of curriculum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family history \/ reunion aspect of tour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preserve history and sites (buildings, artifacts) \u00ab\u00a0heritage preservation\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preserving integrity of story&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Strengths of tour:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multiple sites that could be packaged together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a \u00ab\u00a0connectivity\u00a0\u00bb among sites&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Book on Niagara story and brochure &#8211; recognized producT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Willingness to share information and get message out&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relationship among sites&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lot of tours, but also a lot of stop-ins&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currently it is a self-guided tour but opportunity to put together a guided tour&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dedication of volunteers but it is also a weakness (need for more)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opportunities for packaging&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Variety of sites and events &#8211; creates opportunities&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Weaknesses:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lack of co-ordination among events in region. For example on February 1st there were 3 black heritage events on the same night. Festivals and Events Niagara regional committee may be able to assist with this &#8211; improved scheduling and someone from Network should sit on this committee&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bus tours who stop to look at site from bus or only give participants 5 minutes to tour site (no remuneration given to sites)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bus tour operators &#8211;
