Alfred Lafferty est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto en 1839 de parents qui avaient \u00e9chapp\u00e9 \u00e0&#13;\nl&rsquo;esclavage aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Ses parents, tous deux analphab\u00e8tes, \u00e9taient d\u00e9termin\u00e9s \u00e0 offrir une \u00e9ducation \u00e0 leurs enfants. En 1856, Lafferty est admis \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Toronto o\u00f9 il obtient une licence avec mention tr\u00e8s bien en math\u00e9matiques et en lettres classiques ; il re\u00e7oit une m\u00e9daille d&rsquo;argent dans chaque d\u00e9partement. Apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9, Lafferty poursuit une carri\u00e8re dans l&rsquo;enseignement et, en 1872, il est nomm\u00e9 directeur de la Guelph High school, aujourd&rsquo;hui connue sous le nom GCVI.
