Black history month was initiated in the United States in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Negro History Week was designed to be the highlight of a year spent studying African American contributions. It was first celebrated in Toronto, Ontario, Canada by the Canadian Negro Women’s Association in the 1950’s.
In 1979, the Ontario Black History Society had Black History Month officially proclaimed in Toronto. The OBHS is dedicated to the study of Black History, committed to promoting the contributions of people of African descent to the entire community.
Through the efforts of the OBHS, Black History Month has gained wider recognition in Canada. This art print salutes the 70th anniversary of people of African descent celebrating their accomplishments.
