Thank you for your letter concerning the Quebec referendum.
Quebecers have reaffirmed the value of what we have built together as a nation by
choosing to stay in Canada; they have opted for change without break-up or upheaval. And I
strongly believe that the incredible outpouring of good feelings and goodwill demonstrated by
Canadians from coast to coast in the last week of the campaign played an important part in
convincing a majority of Quebecers to choose Canada.
By their spontaneous display of pride and emotion, ordinary Canadians proved what this
great country is all about. The massive pro-Canada rally in Montreal was a watershed in
Canadian history; a stirring gathering where Quebecers declared their love of country and
Canadians from every province embraced Quebec and Quebecers. I was moved by this
unprecedented patriotic fervour.
I would like to express my appreciation for the time you have taken to share your
thoughts and feelings about the future of our nation. It is my strong hope that you will lend
your support as we go about developing innovative responses to the profound desire for
change being felt among all Canadians.
